An email out of the blue, saying "Christian Dierker wants to exchange referrals with you". I don't know who he is, or why he wants to "exchange referrals" whatever that means. If this is anything to do with LinkedIn I can't see the connection. Edit : Okay, I see him on LinkedIn and he's a headhunter. But there's no message from him on LinkedIn, so this email looks highly suspect. Unwanted spam, and an unknown privacy risk if I reply to the email. Edit : Read this - *****

For some reason, i receive spam from them. They are hiding behind a privacy service (WHOIS) which makes me suspicious. Apparently they harvest LinkedIN address lists - but in a totally inappropriate way (sending business mails to private addresses). If you use this service - which may or may not be good - do NOT approve them to harvest your linked in contacts. We might not be amused.

This website sends massive spams, and the contents are misleading and false.

This website seems to obtain its 'referral network' by accessing new members' linkedin profiles and mass emailing their connections. To be fair, people can opt-out of this by reading the 'fine print' on the check-boxes that you agree to during sign-up. If you received an email similar to the one below it was probably generated without the user even noticing. Do NOT click on referral links without confirming that the person intentionally sent you a referral email! This is an unsavory practice, but it is usually avoidable by reading everything during account sign-up... "Hope all is well. I'd like to recommend clients to [insert company name] so I've added you to my referral network. Simply click the link below and we can start exchanging referrals..."

The site has few users and the conversations revolve around people promoting themself, so its not a quality site by any stretch of the imagination.

ReferralKey has a good service for network marketers and business owners a lot of members spam the service, but that happen in all business on the internet you just have know who to trust online or offline.I like the service of Referralkey I have got some good clients for business opportunities.

After 15 good minutes my most concrete conclusion about Referral Key is that I should offer myself as a Consultant referral to Referral Key to provide them the valued advice that a) I am not a dentist (aka their expertise categories need rehauling), b) Constant Contact is not a good endorser for their homepage, and c) simple case studies of Referral Key efficacy are needed to entice people to sign up.

Started spamming me because one person who uses it gave them my email address.

the service itself is not bad. people's carelessness makes bad use of everything.

Used by phishing scamsters - who choose this tool particularly for what reason? I've no idea, but I've experienced emails with spoofed headers and the message referring to me by name, using names that would seem legit and a style of writing that will catch most people. But then they ask you to click the link below - which is huge sized, maybe 32px+ and is some referralkey link. tl;dr sorry, phishers, you'll have to try much harder. I selected browser exploit because if it's a possibly spoofed header mail, either unblocking it (by allowing images to load or clicking said link) it's likely that there are scripts that will exploit your browser (sniffers, maybe even keyloggers, malware and adware/spyware installers)
