OK, this is a legit site, Western Digital (WD)'s support knowledgebase and download centre. However, I have a major issue with the outright LIES told by WD on why one has to use Windows, and Windows ONLY to officially test their drives. This is obviously because they don't provide the software for other operating systems. Why not? I can only assume it is because they cannot be bothered to pay developers to do it - since it's the minority who DON'T use Windows. However, they market to Mac users specifically with some of their models. I find it ridiculous that some companies like to insult their customers like this, but are so cowardly, they hide the fact away on one of their support pages, NOT on the outside of the packaging where it should be clearly-written! I'm sure it wouldn't make a difference to their revenue, and people wouldn't be offended at their dishonesty, so it might even INCREASE repeat business and decrease returns! Capitalism... eh? Always needing to be based on lies and exploitation instead of intelligent management and good design performance (or so it seems in the 21st century where marketing beats engineering!) EVIDENCE: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/940/ "How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows Answer ID 940 | Last Updated ***** " "Note: Mac OSX Users: Due to limitations in Mac OSX, the drive will need to be connected to a PC running Windows in order to run our diagnostics. " Oh yeah? WHAT "limitations in Mac OSX"? The fact that it doesn't have the same code/interface code as Windows, and so you'd have to re-write the software? That's not a Mac OSX limitation, that's a WD Development BUDGET limitation. If I'm wrong, please show evidence, as this behaviour is typical of arrogant manufacturers making you dance to their tune rather than vice-versa (and the one paying should call the tune, right?) http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1733/ "A WD My Book Studio Edition hard drive does not spin down after using the Windows Safely Remove Hardware feature. " "This issue is caused by the inability of the DRM [Windows's Drive Removal Manager?] to communicate with the hard drive once removed. " Why blame Windows when surely the enclosure's on-board logic can detect the unique signal(s) sent when Windows 'Safely Removes' it? Then respond to that by automatically spinning down? Not so important in this case, but yet another excuse by WD instead of designing a solution to a higher level. Have a look and make your own mind up, but any hardware company supporting the Windows near-monopoly is a very bad thing indeed, IMHO.

Helped me figure out which N+ USB Adapter are compatible with the WD HD Live units. Took me less than one minute. The employees at Best Buy don't even know that not all will work, and that you can even stream wireless to it. Laff! Great site, thanks for your research! !~Karma~!
