WARNING: The EFF contains security risks. This site spreads viruses, adware, and/or spyware. The content may also be X-rated. See: http://www.*****/Archive/WebsiteDetails.aspx?domain=eff.org I encourage people to contact Lightspeed Systems at support <at> lightspeedsystems <dot> com and tell them how foolish they are for categorizing this site under the "security risk" category. I already had an email conversation with them consisting of the following: ----- Me: I was recently doing research on the pending SOPA legislation at my high school, only to find that two resources were blocked by Lightspeed Systems' web filtering software database. The two items- ***** and eff.org- were surprisingly manually moved by a user named LIGHTSPEED/Lori to the security.proxy category, per suggestions from users RobC and Steve, respectively. While these domains can no doubt be manually removed by my individual school administrators, this sets a poor image on the legitimacy of your services, considering there are many domains and services (such as ANY website served over SSL) not blocked/blockable by Lightspeed's database which are decidedly non-educational and/or inappropriate for school networks. Schools and other campuses may switch to products that correctly categorizes sites and services- therefore protecting access to and protecting users from inappropriate material and allowing access to the rest of the internet- rather than paying for one which does neither. As the explanation of the category suggests, domains listed in the category are either web proxy servers or open SMTP relays. I am fairly certain neither of the sites offer said services. DuckDuckGo is a search engine which offers "non-bubbling" results, i.e. they do not modify the results based on your search history, giving you an unbiased list of results. The EFF, or Electronic Frontier Foundation, is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to protecting civil rights in the digital world. If you would like more information, I have CCed this email to them, and you are free to contact them. --- Me: DuckDuckGo was supposedly reviewed this afternoon, but was left in the same category. I would like to know where this "proxy" or "open SMTP relay" is located so that I may use it in the future. Thank you. At this point, eff.org has been moved to the security category, alleging that the site poses security risks to schools. I am confused as to which risks you are referring. Could you please have an uninvolved personnel review the site? It seems to me that a request was made by one employee to another to move it to a blocked category, then the employee was given the privileges to classify sites himself later on and did so in this review. Not exactly a review without preconceived bias. ----- (DuckDuckGo was moved to the "search" category.) The conversation continued: ----- Me: Glad to see I can use an unbiased search engine again. Now on to the issue of eff.org allegedly spreading viruses, malware, adware, and/or X-rated content. Web of Trust gives eff.org a 5/5 in all categories- Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, and Child Safety- and said ratings are given an "Excellent" reliability. See http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/eff.org It seems interesting to me that ***** receives only 3/5 in Trustworthiness and 2/5 in the remaining categories, also with "Excellent" reliability. Hmm... Perhaps lightspeedsystems.com should be removed from the G category, as according to a non-biased resource it is decidedly not "Deemed suitable for viewers of all ages." Nor does it include "education, family, business, search, shopping, sports," or "travel" information. I wonder why the domain is given such low ratings in the Trustworthiness and Vendor Reliability categories. --- Steve Hefner <xxx@ipmagic.com>: Not an issue. I consider eff.org a security risk and it will remain in the security category. --- Me: Is that official Lightspeed Systems policy? If so, I will be sure to remember that in the future. --- Steve Hefner <xxx@ipmagic.com>: It is now. --- Me: Interesting policy. I now understand part of the reasons behind your inexplicable conviction that the EFF provides some kind of risk to your users. ----- In other words, the site has been categorized as such based on a "gut" feeling and no one at Lightspeed Systems feels that's inappropriate.

They developed an addon that automatically sends users to the HTTPS version of the site they're using. It's called "HTTPS Everywhere". I recommend it to anyone and everyone that is concerned about their privacy. ;) www.eff.org/helpout

Website of the Electronic Frontier Foundation; protects freedom of speech around the world and fights for digital rights. Without EFF, the Internet would be a LOT worse off. If you value their work, please help them out with a small donation. They accept all the usual methods, but they also accept BitCoins! www.eff.org/helpout
