While Facebook is a very useful site and holds many positive aspects, the pre-settings in terms of privacy etc. are not necessarily in the interest of users. Facebook makes various offers to change privacy settings, but doesn't invite users to edit these settings upon setting up a new account. I agree with other comments, that facebook stores masses of information on all users that are not deleted, even if users decide to do so themselves or request Facebook to do so. This does not comply with German law, for example. Last but not least, Facebook is partially used by racist or extremist groups (e.g. in Bulgaria). I've come upon groups that support "genocide", for example. Considering the amount of money that Facebook makes, I don't understand why there are no ethical guidelines by which professionals search and destroy such contents and report the relevant users to local authorities.

Facebook has impacted the web in huge ways and is a great tool. That being said the content on Facebook is only as trustworthy as the people who make it. Anyone can create an app and not everyone has noble intentions. Use the same discretion as you use elsewhere online here and you will have a good experience.

if you are using FB you should know that they are using everything what YOU give THEM. if an application wants to take some data of you... why do YOU say yes? why do YOU say... oh... FB... here are my personal informations! THINK of it. don't tell them everything. why do YOU tell them where you live, phone number, address... if YOU develope awareness for personal responsibility... they wount get everything. delete not used apps; hide/delet to personal information; create a spam-mail-account or filter...
