Steve works in a crucial, but controversial field: healing trauma and preventing abuse in toxic groups, abusive churches, and cults. There are thousands of people who feel he's changed their lives. Some feel he has saved their lives. I am one of those. OTOH, any whistle blower who calls out abuse by an individual, group, or cause that some people feel strongly about will attract criticism, hate speech, and attacks on character and career. I'm not saying critics are bad people, even if they belong to groups that abuse. But when passions run high, everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes serious ones. This is a failing of sites such as MyWOT, Angie's List, and others. When anyone can vote but few do, it can happen the dialog is twisted by a dedicated minority who do not wish a crusader well. These sites serve general consumer goods well. But, God knows how they would have treated Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Theresa, Jesus or anyone else who dared cry out about injustice by the powerful. I'm not asking any reader here to give people like Steve a pass—or any others of us who work against spiritual or cultic abuse. Just use your critical judgment turned to 11. And ask yourself how a man who has dedicated his life to raising questions about ethics and abuse in any group he sees them in, letting the chips fall as they may, could possibly deserve poor ratings.
