This website offers a good parental control program called "K9 web protection". It includes links to good information about how to be safe online. However, some of the categories on the parental control program which users can choose to block include "alternative spirituality", and "religion", as well as things like "alternative sexuality" or "politics"; whether or not this is good depends on what your political views are. Then again, most other parental control programs offer the ability to block anything, including those websites, by category, too.

I tried K9 Protection out because it was on my computer when I got it. At first glance it seemed like a great product but when I went into the details of what they allow in and what they block, it felt alot like censorship and veiled bigotry disguised as safety from all the bad stuff in the world. The only problem is that there was little or no room for freedom if you took their recommended settings and by the time I started setting it the way I thought it should be set, you may as well throw the program out the window. I will be letting all of my LGBT friends know about this too. I chose the Ethical issues label because I do not believe that it is ethical to cut out everything that makes us different just to keep us "safe". I guess that if parents want to give up their responsibility for teaching children right from wrong to a program. This one will protect them from everything and you can raise little automatrons that don't have any differing opinions and are all the same. I would never want to be raised like that and I would never raise my kids like that. If they never come in contact with something that they need to question, then they are cannon fodder for what the real world is going to do to them. That is not preparing them for the future. People cannot live in a bubble.

My friend's parents use K9, and for him, it's extremely annoying. He cannot access a great webcomic called Order of the Stick, solely because it has the word "stick" in it. K9 is child friendly, but unfortunately, it keeps people from having fun on the World Wide Web. A child will not be able to get on in life if his/her computer is sheltered, because life will come as a shock to them when they move away from home, and because K9 could potentially backfire. The people employed by K9 and Blue Coat think that children are entirely clueless about malware and spyware, along with what is in the world wide web that could be potentially dangerous to children. I use McAfee Security and nothing else, because I simply need nothing else. I'm careful about my actions, use NoScript, Firefox, and Web of Trust, and I stay away from virus sites or anything that looks suspicious. That's all I need.
