Good site overall. Safe for young children, because parents can restrict them to quick chat only. It can be addicting, and sometimes it does get boring.
I have been playing for nearly 5 years along with being a paying member. I have never experienced any problems with the site, plus Jagex updates the game often.
I have been playing for seven years and I can tell you that all the swear words are heavily filterd and the chat rooms are also filterd and only accesible to members or high lvl players.
This site is quite safe for children, safety is a top priority for the developers of the game. I've been playing for several years, and yes, there are some people that want to scam you or get personal information, but you can report them, just don't be stupid. If you have children, try to teach them what to do in these situations, you won't let your child run around in real life without supervision do you? Why would you do such a thing in a virtual world?
Not the best or kids, children do not realize the risk of phishing websites and scams. So if someone comes up to them in game and says If you want a million coins go to www. ....... and login. They probably will do it and get their account stolen etc. Also hurtful things can be said on runescape and it is a common place for cyberbullys to bully people. One last problem is adults can play this game as well and that can, in some cases be a risk to children as children dont in many cases realise the danger of online ... umm lets say strangers.
Not to put-down a game, but it just wasn't that good. I feel sad when I see kids going into a library, just to play Runescape on the weekends.
Anyway, when I played, the graphics were hard to see through, I didn't know how to level, (Maybe they should put a better tut in..)and I had no idea where to go.
