I've seen sites that are spammish, phishers, malware spreaders, etc. but are given the mcafee seal just because they paid for it. I don't even use this site for reference anymore. WOT all the way! However, please, WOT, do NOT go down the same path!
Siteadvisor is completely useless. It marks sites infamous for containing loads of spy/ad/malware (think cursormania) as SAFE!!! Even the community ratings say that the sites are bad, and yet is shows up as green!!!
SiteAdvisor used to be more reliable. In recent years I've seen a number of malware, dangerous and misleading sites listed as safe. I think McAfee has bent under pressure from some sites, maybe from threat of legal action, and given sites better ratings than they deserve. I no longer trust SiteAdvisor's ratings. I have never seen such compromises on WOT, whose ratings seem unimpeachable.
I use this as a cursory check tool. In other words, if I am pretty sure it is a good site anyhow, I will include it in a post or something just to have some kind of proof. That said, being a McAfee product, I wouldn't use it to really rate anything that I wasn't already sure was safe. Still, as a common sense checker, it is fine, it is useful.
Limited usefulness. Ratings can be misleading. A site can get a good rating if a third party advertises it through spam. Takes a LONG TIME to log in to review a site. Discouraging to users wanting to warn others.
