In May 2013, a malicious installer, distributed by Genieo partner Softonic,[7] was found by security software company Intego. The installer masquerades as a necessary update to Adobe Flash Player and attempts to install ***** without user interaction. Dynamic libraries are added to the Safari browser, which intercept searches intended for Bing and Google.[8] Other versions of Genieo for Mac have also been offered as 'codecs' required for video playback.[9] Testing carried out on Genieo for Mac in June 2013 found that it left active software behind, after using the supplied uninstaller, which required detailed manual removal.[9][10][11] In November 2013, another fake application installer was reported to include Genieo adware. [12] In January 2014, Sophos added Genieo for Mac to their threat list; in the category Viruses and Spyware : Trojan : Adware .[13] As of April 2014, Genieo for Mac is flagged by Intego (mentioned above)[8][10] and, according to an analysis at VirusTotal, by 20 (out of 50 surveyed) anti-malware solutions, including Ad-Aware, Avast!, Bitdefender, Comodo, Dr. Web, ESET, Fortinet, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Trend Micro Housecall, and Sophos.[14]

Habe ich mir ausversehen heruntergeladen und fast nicht mehr gelöscht bekommen! Beim Öffnen des Internets hat Genieo meine Startseite von Google in eine eigene umgetauscht. Außerdem noch viele einzelne andere Kleinigkeiten. Finger weg!!! Macht nur Ärger!!!

Genio is an adware. It attempts to hijack your browser to redirect you to paid links. Besides being unethical, it has now been blacklisted with over 23 Antivirus companies. Stay away from it.....

Genieo's adware has a history of posing as things like video plug-ins or Adobe Flash Player updates. On top of that, if you do end up installing Genieo, the provided uninstaller doesn't work. It appears to remove the software, but leaves behind actively-running components, such as a process that is deceptively named "Application".

Tricky and unethical redistribution ways. I wanted to download some pdf file and got redirected to ***** where instead if my pdf I've got installgenieo executable! This is even worse than usual toolbar, Genieo uses Java and eats a lot of ram! It also produces some errors like: "Error loading url.dll The specified module can't be found"

I don't have any absolute proof that Genio was to blame for Java crashes, but messages traced back to Genio started popping up even after I resolved graphics crashes. I am leery of any program that tracks so much of my activity that it provides a homepage based on my interests. Besides the pop-ups always covered the scroll bar in whatever program I was using.
