Neither the "Malicious content, viruses", nor the "Other", categories are adequate for this matter as the hazard derives from postings on the ietab.net forum offering links to other websites. "Joined: 05/12/2010" [i. e. 12th May 2010] However, although, on May 17, 2010, the Google Safe Browsing report for ietab.net was favourable, ietab.net has the misfortune to sit on a server which might not be adequately protected from cross infections from other websites on the same hosting network? See: Safe Browsing diagnostic page for ietab.net http://google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=ietab.net Safe Browsing diagnostic page for the network hosting ietab.net ***** See also: Fresh exploit served up with ads Now I’m not saying that Liberty is being served up by ad networks, but the stats pages for the exploit kits are certainly saying that. And if their stats are to be believed, it’s interesting how even visiting major websites can allow you to be drawn to an attack site. ***** Interesting attack profile One of our activities involves tracking both victims and attackers. Well, would-be victims, because we're detecting and therefore blocking the attempts. ***** Malware delivered by Yahoo, Fox, Google ads ***** [http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20000898-245.html?tag=newsLeadStoriesArea.1] US-CERT uncovers JavaScript security vulnerability in Safari The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has found a security hole in Safari, with which a hacker could run arbitrary code at the privilege level of the current user account if the victim visits a malicious Web page. ***** Disposable Facebook apps installing adware ***** Whoops - Twitter got hacked again ***** Treasury website hacked ***** ***** Volcanic ash is a lure? ***** Heads up - 0day ITW - Rihanna is a lure The problem is that when Sun released Java 6, update 10 in April 2008, they introduced a new feature (it's not a bug, it's a feature folks) called Java Web Start. In order to make it easier for developers to install software, they created a method to execute a program from a website. ***** Why Security Software? Understanding the threats ***** "Hacked websites, fake media players, [fake anti-virus software,] malicious Office documents and social engineering are all part of the Internet threat landscape today." See: AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software Anti-Virus Comparative February 2010 ***** Virus Bulletin RAP test results A graph showing standard signature-based AV scanning along the y axis, against proactive detection of new malware along the x axis. Very informative. ***** Virus Bulletin VB100 results summary Is your AV software listed here? Did it pass or fail Virus Bulletin's test when running on your OS? ***** Make sure you have an effective "zero day" application, aka "application firewall", or HIPS, behavioural, or heuristic, application, so nothing can install secretly between virus scans, or because your AV engine fails to flag up something, new, old, or one of the thousands of "wild list" samples which your AV engine cannot recognise. If you are using a good anti-virus application, and that detects some problem with one of the files on your computer, upload the file to Virus Total and see if any, or how many, AV engines do not recognise the problem! [June 2010: 39 branded AV engines in use at this time.] Free online analysis of suspect files at: ***** Jotti's malware scan is a free online service that enables you to scan suspicious files with several anti-virus programs. Scanners used are Linux versions; detection differences with Windows versions of the same scanners may occur due to implementation differences. There is a 20MB limit per file. Files uploaded here are shared with anti-virus companies so detection accuracy of their anti-virus products can be improved. Read more about this in our privacy policy.
