Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science as a young woman when she was healed while studying the Bible. The Bible is an integral part of the spiritual healing...just as Christ Jesus practiced.To quote the Statement of Being from her writing: "There is no life, truth, intelligence or substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation for God is all in all. Spirit is immortal truth. Matter is mortal error. Spirit is real and eternal. Matter is unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is his image and likeness, therefore man is not material, he is spiritual." Yes, as in all religions, there are extremists who twist interpretations. I was brought up in the Christian Science church. My parents were loving and encouraging but allowed me, when I was old enough, to make my own decisions about healthcare. You would find that the AMA has determined that prayer has a significant positive effect on the outcome of medical treatments. I have been in the care of doctors who are very respectful of Scientists and prayer. My paternal Grandfather was diagnosed with TB in his college years at Cornell. The doctor did not hold out much hope him. His roommate was a Christian Scientist and shared his knowledge. The doctor was stunned to find no sign of the disease months later. My Mother was declared dead in an emergency room after a terrible attack of Polio. She survived but was given very little hope. Her father-in-law (my paternal Grandfather) shared his knowledge of Christian Science. The nurses encouraged her to refuse the high doses of morphine. She had to work hard to overcome the numerous negative medical opinions and doubts. She enjoyed a wonderful life as a Christian Scientist to age 78.
