The idiots make us pay for ebooks hosted by their users, without letting a penny of it reach the authors. Hell, they don't even let us read ebooks that are in the public domain. And the worst thing is, they can't be stopped, because they have a bunch of lawyers saying so.
Never registered, just followed a Google link, and when it asked to pay to download, closed the browser. About an hour later, I get an email from them. The thing is, I NEVER ENTERED MY EMAIL ADDRESS ON THIS SITE. In other words, the web page stole my email address!
They are improving a lot. The site used to be difficult to navigate and cluttered with a lot of useless or poor quality content,. There were also quite a few (maybe 25%?) items that I was afraid to download or use, because posting on Scribd seemed likely a violation of copyright. However, in the past 6 months, Scribd has improved a lot. The articles and books are better quality, there are some items for purchase which are good value, and they've gotten very tough on copyright infringement., building a CMS database of copyright holders holders. and banning users who post disallowed items.
