It's ok but some file extensions like html require a web browser you never heard of. Some file extensions contain extra software that you don't need to open the file.

Cool to check what the file type is and how to open it, but please do not download the software to "open" it.

Downloads bundle multiple viruses.

Since 2016 we have not hosted downloads on file.org, but link to the developer's original download. If you have found a link to an external site with virus-ridded downloads, please do contact us so we can remove it.
It's a good site, that has ALOT of useful info on file types and programs you can use to open them. JUST DON'T DOWNLOAD ANYTHING The downloads are rigged with malware and viruses.

Thank you, much appreciated. However, we have not hosted downloads on file.org since 2016. We link directly to the developers' sites. If you find an external link to software with malware or viruses, please do let us know so we can remove it.
Good site when looking for file extension description, also using downloaded Free file viewer and never had any problem!

Not safe at all and they are NOT a member of the TRUSTe Certification Program ***** Avoid at all costs

We used to host downloads on file.org, and was TRUSTe certified at the time. However, in 2015 we decided it was not worth the effort, and started linking directly to developers' sites instead. In that way, we are sure our users always find the latest version of the software they need.
Honestly, i have never experienced anything bad from this site. Also i use their file viewer all the time! never once got a virus from it.

Perfectly fine for describing what file extensions are and how to open them.

Page is blocked by AVIRA anti virus browser security. After having unblocked I tried to download the Universal files viewer (for P7M files whatever that might be), but my AVIRA again gave an alert: Requested URL: <http://files4.filedownload13.com/download/1181108/dl?bc=1181108&pid=Unknown&brand=bitberry.com&country=DE&osName=Windows&osVersion=7&browserName=SeaMonkey&browserVersion=2&cb=-556918180&zTmp=1> Information: Contains Trojan TR/Agent.669168

We stopped hosting downloads in early 2016, so this review is not reflecting how the site works today. We link directly to developers' sites and host no installers on file.org any longer.

We stopped hosting downloads in early 2016, so this review is not reflecting how the site works today. We link directly to developers' sites and host no installers on file.org any longer. It was impossible to make sure all downloads were clean, and it hurt our reputation. Now, if you find a link to an external site distributing adware or malware, please let us know and we will promptly remove it.
Downloader contains a large amount of ads and malicious ones at that. Does not clearly give a way to ignore the ads. Advertizes a blacklisted product (free file viewer) to use for downloading.

I understand the rating. Because the downloads are malwares. But in my opinion this site help us to know about unknown file formats

This site is OK, just as long as you don't download any of the software from their site. Only download software from the official distributor's website.

Please do not accuse us of virus distribution and "phishing". Those claims are downright lies. You may have seen our download manager marked as "potentially unwanted" by Eset because it shows a few advertisements for other products during the installation process. That is a single anti-virus company's harsh view on ads in installers.
This site may contain malicious software that has been blocked eset smart security, {Potentially unwanted content This page is identified as potentially unwanted. http://file.org/extension/sib This web page is on the list of websites with dubious reputation or websites with potentially unwanted content.}

Eset marks it as "potentially unwanted" because it shows a few advertisements for other products during the installation process. It is misleading and downright untrue to mark our site as "phishing", "scam", "potentially illegal" etc. etc. when all you have seen is a single anti-virus company's harsh view on ads in installers.
According to urlvoid.com, the website is blacklisted on 3 different independent malware blacklisters and all 3 say file.org contains malware. I was searching a file extension when both avast! and WOT said this website has bad reputation.

Hello, it is unfair to claim that our site distributes malware or viruses when it is simply not true. We host the official product installers and our download manager is TRUSTe certified (http://clicktoverify.truste.com/pvr.php?page=validate&softwareProgramId=263&sealid=112) and safe. So please do not accuse us of distributing malware and viruses when it is not true. That you don't like the ads we show - fine, but please stick to the truth when rating the site. What exactly do you find "Suspicious" and "Misleading" about our site? We hide nothing. We have a good privacy policy in place, and contact and about us links on every single page on the site. Phishing? Really? We don't even collect user information :-)
Website is linked to some programs that could compromise your data with malware. Avoid this site! URL Void's report shows that it has been blacklisted by four virus checkers: http://www.urlvoid.com/scan/file.org/ Also some suspicious activity reported by Virus Total.com: ***** I have assigned a Poor rating for Trustworthiness here.

MALWARE DISTRIBUTION Threat Name: Trojan.ADH.2 file: 2wzj2fhl.exe.part Origin: downloaded from http:/file.org/dl/dl.php.......... Risk: HIGH ____________________ AVOID!! I ended up with above malware which was dealt with by Norton anti-virus... how I ended up with anything from this site is a mystery as I did not knowingly download anything from there!!

DO NOT download anything from this site go to Google and search for it there!!! DO NOT click on the "3 Steps For A Faster PC" ad that I see every time I visit this site without Ad Block. When the software that is in the software that can open your file says "User Submitted," don't run off to Google searching for that piece of software. Only search for the ones that say "Verified." Otherwise, it is a good site for learning about files EDIT: Apparently, this site promotes software developed by Bit Berry. They are good software developers, but don't download it from this site. EVER!!!!
