Police officers serve and protect our communities, but union bosses have another use for them: Forced dues. With free legal aid from National Right to Work Foundation staff attorneys, 17 police officers in Kansas City, Missouri, are fighting back. In a corrupt agreement between the city and Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 99, union bosses made wage and benefits concessions in exchange for the power to force nonmember police officers into paying forced union dues and fees as a condition of their employment. The 17 nonmember officers allege in their suit that the FOP Lodge 99 union hierarchy is demanding forced dues without following federal disclosure requirements under the Foundation-won U.S. Supreme Court precedent Chicago Teachers Union v. Hudson. The case underscores both the need for a Right to Work law in Missouri and the dangers of the Police and Firefighter Monopoly Bargaining Bill, which could unleash an explosion of similar schemes across the country.
