Hostgator has been safe enough, however now has some serious security issues with WordPress blogs being hacked through sites hosted by Hostgator itself.
Additionally, Hostgator has trouble managing its accounts, not to mention the spammers who make use of them. I've had problems that have originated solely from hostgator, such as incompatible versions of php and MySQL on their servers, for example.
Based on my personal mis-experiences with them, their technical support is spotty and inadequate.
They were really cool but have been sold out few years ago and now simply do not want to understand what is happening with them clearly. Support started very slow and bad for basically any reason out there and I do hope we can't take it anymore.
Used to have great customer support, now they want you to pay for basic features and website security (they call it sitelock) and will even lie and say you have a virus to try and trick you into buying it (but other website malware checks say your site is clean).

Spam and criminal friendly hosting company HostGator 's abuse department ignores complaints about scammers, criminals, and spammers operating on its network and knowingly allows the criminals to continue operating and spamming from their dirty network and violating US federal laws even after HostGator's abuse department has received multiple reports.
