Is truecrypt.org Safe?

It's hard to say who's behind this and what their motives are. The authors are unknown (understandably so, I guess). Open source code appears secure if you build the binaries yourself, but most users download pre-built binaries, and, contrary to what they say, their pre-built binaries appear very uneasy to verify as to whether they match their source code. Their header for Windows is said to be substantially larger than than for Linux, and who is to tell it does not contain your encrypted password? Their license is suspect, making RedHat exclude it from their distributions. Their forums are said to ban people even for very innocent inquiries. "Audit TrueCrypt" movement is trying to gather enough funding and may be making a breakthrough in a month or two; at which point, I'd be revising this review, making it either green or red. Right now, I'd be concerned. With intelligence agencies and their billions of dollars spent on their very active participation in the industry, what's to prevent one of them from writing software like this?

Extremely easy to use open source on-the-fly drive encryption software. In an age of multi-gigabyte to terabyte storage capacities that can be easily lost if one is not careful it is mandatory to use encryption. Make your portable hard and flash drives useless to outsiders. It's your data. Secure it! :-)
